Ebookstores, Non-DRM
Self-pub & independent ebook store list. This post may change over time & get new additions. Feel free to comment with new stores & news about current stores (e.g. "has shut down/main url has changed" or "switched focus from horror to sci-fi" or "includes some DRM'd titles," etc.).
This list is limited to stores that sell, not just give away, ebooks with no DRM. Stores that sell a mix of DRM & non-DRM'd books (Fictionwise, Amazon, etc.) go on a different list. Sites that give away ebooks and don't sell them go on a different list. I'm also not listing stores on the Three Press Consulting's list of DRM-Free Ebook Publishers, to avoid duplicated effort, and to keep this to "sites not easily found on other lists." They have 8 nonfic, 19 "regular" fic, and 40 romance/erotica publishers listed; some of those don't have direct ebook stores.
Science fiction, horror & romance are popular genres; I'd appreciate links to mystery or thriller-focused ebookstores.
AKW books: Great Books, Affordable Reading - "AKW Books is an imprint of Kalar/Wade Media. We publish new, top quality, eBooks (mostly novels). Think of us as a New York publishing house that does eBooks. Same high standards, different format."
Angry Robot Books: "a global imprint dedicated to the best in modern adult science fiction, fantasy and everything inbetween. Our book line launched in July 2009, with both physical books across a wide variety of formats, e-books with audio to follow."
Apex Book Company: Painting the Landscape of Dark Fiction - "Apex Publications stirred to life on March 16th, 2005, with the publication of the first issue of Apex Science Fiction and Horror Digest. ... Apex has produced over twenty books ranging from steampunk paranormal romance to hardcore horror and everything in between." (All ebooks are $2.99 and DRM-free.)
BeWrite books: Publishers of fine books - "The BeWrite Books catalogue at the start of 2010 contained 120 titles in so many genres that it's simpler to itemise what we do not offer: books for children or exclusively YA, erotica, swords-and-sorcery fantasy and space-opera-style science fiction. All other genres are represented."
Book View Cafe: Because you can never have too many books - "Book View Café is a cooperative site created by a group of writers who want to take advantage of the internet’s possibilities for reaching a wider audience and to distribute their work directly to their readers."
Closed Circle: E-Books and more direct from the authors - "Closed Circle is the brainchild of three authors, multiple Hugo award winner, C.J.
