Are you saving them as mobis? Also, I THINK it might be beneficial to download them from the kindle's browser, if only for the not-having-to-figure-out-where-they-should-go bit. (I could be wrong, I have not actually touched a working fire, but I know on my phone the kindle app is... picky about where things are stored. Also, it seems to not like subdirectories.)
