Sensible handling of two column PDFs would be a dream!! It would be good to know about the zooming. The main issue I had with the PRS-350's zoom was that I had to switch into zoom mode, zoom, read, then switch out to turn the page. Since the context switch between zoom and non-zoom on e-Ink is understandably quite slow, it was really painful to go through a three step process (unzoom, turn page, rezoom) just to carry on reading. If you felt like just checking out how the page turning worked when zooming, that would be really useful.
I never really intended to use the eReader for scientific papers, but I've actually found it really handy (even with the limitations of the PRS-350). I like using Calibre to organise the papers, and since I have a long commute the ereader is quite a good way to just flick through the latest publications and see what's going on. I'd still print out or read on a monitor for anything I wanted to seriously get to grips with.
