Barnes & Noble is Now Informing Customers About Data Stolen During Saturday's Hack | The Digital Reader

So it turns out that my suspicions about B&N’s server issues over the weekend were in fact correct.  The retailer was hacked, and has confirmed that customer information, including email addresses and shipping info, was stolen.

Barnes & Noble sent out an email Wednesday night, informing customers about the hack, and denying that any credit card or financial info was compromised. (I have a couple reports from readers that suggest this is not true, so I am remaining skeptical at the moment.)

I have not received this email, but several readers have. I have included a copy at the end of this post. If you are a regular B&N customer, I strongly urge you to ask your credit card company place security checks on your cards just in case.

I'm not American so I never shopped there but in case any of you were customers and may have been compromised but hadn't gotten an email, well, here it is.

This did impact the nook ebook system for some days which is why I'm posting it here, just in case anyone needs to know and wasn't aware. If the post is inappropriate I'm happy to take it down. :)

Yep, and I'm mad as I literally just made an account a few days ago to buy an ebook AND they pretty much blocked off any way to download the ebook except through their locked app so ugh, all round.

ugh that's unfortunate. Hopefully it's fixed soon. I saw some people on the nook reddit say they'd lost access to like 500 books which.. yikes.

Barnes & Noble is owned by the same company that owns Waterstones - though Waterstones doesn't do Nook anymore and passed that off to Kobo (and transferring expired in 2018, which was too late for me and meant I could no longer access my Nook books after I moved to the UK.)

It probably wouldn't impact Waterstones customers, but then again, people who left LiveJournal years ago were impacted by the LiveJournal breach, so I never know how old the data is that's being hacked.

Oh yikes, that sucks.

The "you never know when this place will go out of business/upgrade their servers" thing is exactly why I want so much to download my books....

yeah, much like fictionwise, booksonboard, etc. It sucks. At least a lot of the DRM can be broken these days, though my install of calibre doesn't like too.

It was big enough of a breach to take down their entire system, so god knows how much was taken. Hopefully not everything B&N ever touched.
