Cecilia Tan's Blog Post

Cecilia Tan published a post today entitled "How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Ebook Piracy".  Have I mentioned lately how much I love this woman?

Ooh, that's wonderful.

I'd love to see more authors acknowledging that (1) there's no signs that piracy hurts sales and (2) the alternate is that only legit, full-price customers have ever heard of your work, which has real problems for selling the next whatever.

Someday, I'll put together a poll to find out how many of people's favorite series they bought the first one of at full price.

I'd be really interested in seeing the results for this. :)

I can safely say that I read/listened through my current favorite series through a combination of library/used booksale/library audio download/pirated ebook means, and when the next hardcover comes out this summer, it's going to be pre-ordered through my local indie store (which has had sales drop over 25% since last holiday season, presumably when lots of people received ebook readers).

That would be interesting to see.

And great article!!!

I know for myself piracy has not effected the amount of books that I purchase. I believe that if I really enjoy an author I should show my support for them by buying their books. Sometimes I'll pirate a copy of a book I've already bought in paperback/hardcover form to back-up what I currently own, and sometimes I'll do it to try out an author I'm not sure of, but if that book turns into one that I really enjoy and will re-read, I'll buy it. I see that it's similiar to borrowing from the library (except a lot of pirated copies are formatted terribly - another reason to want to buy a copy).
