Question regarding the Kobo

I have a Kobo that I got for Christmas and while I'm happy with it I'm finding the featured recommendation thing annoying and I was wondering if there's any way to do away with it?

Sure - just change it to "Shortlist". Then books that you have favourited will show up there, which is quite useful.

You favourite books by touching & holding on the little heart next to the book in the library.
