Sony PRS-500

I just acquired a Sony PRS-500 in a roundabout way. It's old, but works, I guess. It came with nothing but a charging cable and a kinda bizarre assortment of books on it, all of which I deleted except one.

Anyway, I know nothing! Clue me up, people! What do I need to know?

(I'm using OSX and have found Docudesk's PRS Reader already.)

Oh, also, I think I saw somewhere that there was a DW comm for people making ebooks of fanfic. I can't find it through interest search. Anyone know what I'm thinking of?

If you get Calibre you can convert html files to Sony format and read fic that way. Supposedly you can take multi-pages fics and combine them into one file but I'm not good at it. Long stuff I just cut and paste into a .rtf and convert that over.

Calibre is an ebook conversion program designed for the Sony Reader; it's open source, free, and cross-platform.

You can find seven bazillion free ebook sites at Mobileread's free ebook page in their wiki (which has plent of other ebooky info).

[personal profile] amalthia's Fanfiction ebook library has over 800 stories. She runs [livejournal.com profile] fanfic_ebooks at LJ; there's no comparable DW comm yet, AFAIK.

I am a cheerfully endless source of ebook babble; let me know if there's anything specific you're interested in. (I don't always have answers, but I know how to find them, or how to phrase the questions over at Mobileread so they'll answer it all for me.)

At the ebook library all the RTF and LRF ebooks should be compatible with your device. :) I hate having to magnify text so on the RTF files I use size 20 Arial font. If you get calibre I highly recommend you check out the tutorial at fanfic_ebooks and I think kindle_ebooks also has a tutorial. I use screencaps on mine.

I have the PRS-500... you know it's really not THAT old. Okay it's probably 3 years old, but the one I got I bought from someone who had them in stock in their original boxes never opened. It does come loaded with a bunch of books and excerpts of books.

But yes, use Calibre to convert things and it will upload to the device also. I don't know if Sony made any software for it that works with Macs. Looking at their website and ... Nope. But if you want to look at the manual for it, you can get it there.

I'm kind of insanely jealous of people with e-readers ><; Despite not having an e-reader myself, though, the making of fanfic into e-books? makes me a very happy person.
