Reading Nook Books on non-Nook tablets

I was looking to purchase a book from Barnes & Noble except it only comes in hardcover and Nook Book. I don't want to purchase a hardcover but I've never purchased a Nook Book before. I have a tablet (Sony Xperia) and I'd like to read this book from it instead of at my computer. Would I be able to purchase it from my computer and transfer it to my tablet or would I need to purchase it directly from my tablet? Also, will I be able to read a Nook Book from my non-Nook tablet and how so? Thank you in advance!

You can buy it either on the tablet or on the computer, you'll just need to have a Barnes & Noble account and log in with that account to the app on your tablet and you'll be able to download it. I assume it's Android? So just search for "nook" on the Play Store and it should come up.

A single title can be shared on up to six devices, I believe.

Also if the title doesn't have DRM (and some Nook books don't), you can use it anywhere. The trick is guessing whether or not it has the DRM on it.

Unfortunately no. I rarely buy Nook books on that account. The exceptions have been from authors who assured their fans that there was no DRM on the title. If the book is on multiple sites, Kobo is pretty good about telling you whether there's DRM on the title or not. If it's a Nook exclusive, you're rolling dice, and if it's from a big NY publisher, the odds are it will have DRM. You might be able to find out if their ebooks have DRM by visiting the publisher's site - some of them (Baen, Tor) are DRM free and like to advertise that.

Once you've bought it, you can generally tell by whether you can open it on another device or not. Or if you have Calibre, try to convert it to another format. If the file has DRM on it, the conversion will fail and report that as the reason.
