Introduction

Hi my name is Lauren and I've had my Sony 505 for a couple of months now. I was working in a bookshop when I bought it (seduced by own sales patter). It is one of my favourite possessions especially as I am commuting long distances for an internship.

I've amassed a huge sci fi and fantasy collection, Chalet School books and a lot of the talked about books.

I'm gradually adding to my fanfic collection, putting them into documents and editing them no longer bothers me. I'm actually quite pleased to be able to see the results.

My nano2008 novel also lives on it which makes me proud and it is also very useful for reading to spot editing mistakes!

I got very fast at converting fanfic to ereader pdb files, and now that I'm converting them to Sony format it's even faster; I don't have to deal with tags that occasionally crash because some bit of bad DRM put an extra one in the text.

I keep thinking that someday I should contact the authors and ask permission to convert them in a way that's suitable for distribution (with metadata, and the URL, and all that); most of my conversions are quick-and-dirty jobs for reading right now.

I would definitely get permission first. There was a huge flap just recently where someone had set up an archive of her own and was archiving without permission. It was ugly.

[personal profile] amalthia has a fanfic ebook archive for stories she has permission to host there.

The problem with an ebook sharing community on Dreamwidth (or any other journal site) is that there's no way to do file storage/exchange here; the ebooks would have to be stored somewhere else.

I'm perfectly happy for this comm to be used for discussing/reccing fanfic ebooks, and if that traffic starts to overwhelm other ebook discussions, a new comm could be made. (Or someone could just make a fanfic_ebooks comm. But it's hard to keep a community going without a certain minimum membership; there are several dead fannish ebook communities on LJ.)

There is a community on LJ called [profile] kindle_ebooks that shares ebooks with author permission.
