Nook vs. Sony

So, I'm wondering if people with Nook have experienced a lack of sturdiness with their devices. My friend has already had to have hers replaced once due to it falling to the ground and being damaged enough to stop working. My Sony has hit the ground a number of times and even without a case, I've not had any problems.

Worst thing I've done to my Sony 505 is not catch it when it fell off the back of the couch. It landed on the tile floor, and I had to file down the top left corner where the silver got smushed and had a sharp edge. That was all, otherwise it seems to have not cared about anything I've done to it.

I have a Nook and have not had any serious problems. My first unit developed a slight crack in the 'page forward' buttons, but that was a known design flaw and it was replaced free of charge without my even having to ask. As for general sturdiness, I haven't noticed any issues in normal use.

I've dropped my Nook, but there's no damage. I keep it in a case-it's padded pleather, bought from B&N. I do not recommend using a reader without a case - it's easier for holding while reading as well as for carrying about. I'll probably only take it out of the case if I decide to install a sim card, and then I will put it back.

I haven't had any issues with my Nook at all, and I am not easy on them. Full on drop at least once, and it slings around with me in my bag.

Have had a nook for over a year. Dropped it a couple of times on the floor (I have tile only). No damages at all.

Six months ago, I got a case for it (might be the same one that adair got--though I bought it at Best Buy instead of B&N.) Have dropped it a few times since and (again) no damages whatsoever.

FWIW, I use my nook daily, throw it in my bag, etc. I was a bit wary of getting one because I kept hearing that the side buttons would break off, but nothing's happened. Well, also, I've learned to "flip the pages" by sliding my thumbs on the touchscreen.

I haven't had any problems with my Nook; I wonder if your friend has a Nook Color? I'd think the big LCD screen would make it a bit more fragile.
