Hi there!

I just joined the group, my Sony Reader Touch arrived today in the mail and I alraedy have my first stupid question... ;-)

The harddrive of my PC has partitions and I installed the Reader Library on the drive with the most available space, stupidly assuming that the books would then also download to that drive. Far from it, they download to my c-drive, where I don't want them. I can't figure out how to change the download path. Any ideas?

If I can't do that, I will probably import books to my calibre library -- which very conveniently let me put my stuff whereever I wanted -- and then delete them from the Reader folder on my c-drive....

Oh, and just to vent -- I think it's utterly stupid that I can only buy and download ebooks from the Sony Reader store if I have an address in the US or Canada. I can find the books I want somewhere else, but still... What the heck?

My SO has a Sony and offered the following:

"Sorry I can't help with the Reader software selecting the wrong drive. I have a Sony Daily Edition (and I LURVE it) which has wi-fi, and I've just downloaded directly to the device and side-loaded from my reader to the computer wherever I want. But I have other suggestions:

I personally have found it most convenient to simply skip the Reader software and Calibre and just side-load my books, but Calibre works nicely too.

As for purchasing books, I can purchase and read books from Borders and Google Books as well as from Sony, so you're not limited. In fact, I have heard that the only place you CAN'T buy books from are Amazon (b/c of their mobi format for Kindle) and Barnes And Noble (they use epub but have some screwy DRM that Sony can't read)."

I don't use the Sony store or the Sony software. :D I use calibre since it is more versatile than the software provided by Sony and since Sony requires you to use their software in order to purchase from their store, that is just lost sales for them.

That's a common problem. However, there are a ton of resources listed in various posts in the community. Also, feel free to ping me privately if you are looking for something that you can't find.

Assuming it's anything like the Sony 505, you can ignore the Sony-ware entirely, and just drag-and-drop files to the reader as you would any other external drive. My partner and I both do that - use Calibre to manage our libraries on pc, and then just move files across to the readers manually .

Calibre has a very nice "Send to device" button, so you don't have to copy the books manually. :) It has also a column to indicate which ones you've got on the Reader and which ones you haven't, which I find really handy.

the 'send to device' button doesn't work with my reader (a UK-only model that only seems to have been sold for about an 8 month window. I love it, but clearly I am a minority) My partner, who has a Sony, wasn't super-keen on using Calibre to sync, and I now can't remember why. Possibly because he's a linux guy and would rather roll his own script?

I use a Sony, and I actually use the Sony Reader software. It hasn't stopped me from buying books from Borders, Kobo, and other online bookstores -- you're not limited to the Sony Reader store. Sometimes you have to manually choose where to download the ebook and then import it, though.

I highly recommend Calibre. I only have Adobe Digital Editions installed for my ebook purchases (which I buy from Books on Board) and then I crack the DRM and upload to Calibre to transfer to my device.

I recommend this article.

Or you can google EPUB Adept DRM removal or something to that effect? I use the plugin in Calibre to remove mobi but another type of De-DRM removal tool for epub.

But the link I sent you seems to combine them all. I was going to test it out myself. :)

Another in the chorus of "don't bother installing the sony software, install calibre and shop for your ebooks somewhere else."
